Weekly Wikems. Fog.

The year is young, beginnings abound, T.H.A. is in dire need of renewal, Atlanta is foggy, and Wikipedia turns fourteen today.  So, I come up with…
Wikems.
Wikipedia poems.

Here’s the idea:
  • Each Thursday – starting today, January 15th, 2015 – I will post a link to a Wikipedia article, a quote from it and my wikem inspired by that quote.
  • I invite you to check out the article, searching for a quote that clicks with you.  (You are free to use the quote I provide if it happens to be the one.)
  • Once you've found your quote, use it as an epigraph, write your wikem, and post a link to it in the comments below.  (You are welcome to post your wikem directly in the comments if you prefer.)

 Let's play:
Here's your Wikipedia article for today:

Here's my wikem:

SWINGING
"Fog is a collection of liquid water droplets or ice crystals suspended in the air at or near the Earth's surface."

She swings, her long body
elongating even more
as, coming towards him,
she leans back, laughing,
eyes closed, neck curved,
blood rushing to her head,
her bare feet kicking the sky.

She climbs to the peak
and, reaching it, she stops,
breathless, translucent
like a sunray, or wind,
or a droplet of water,
suspended in the air
near the Earth’s surface.

The swings exhale,
and, lassoed by gravity,
she falls, surrendering,
letting go of the ropes,
leaning in, eyes fixed on him,
as she moves further away,
into the morning fog.

Thank you for reading my wikem.  I look forward to reading yours.

  1. Thank-you. I was determined to try and get back to a few poetry prompt sites this year. Other writers add fuel for the fire and oomph to the blah...this sounds like fun.

Sasha, I was on that swing, captivated by a long ago...and love the ending.

    1. Thank you, Janet.
It's a spur-of-the-moment post, but who knows, maybe this idea will take off?
Hope to read your Wikem soon :-)
(I tweaked the rule a bit.)

  2. epigraph from wikipedia; Fog can be considered a type of low-lying cloud, and is heavily influenced by nearby bodies of water, topography, wind conditions, and even human activities.

    Fo-gotten...a Wikem

    Heavily influenced by near-by bodies
    Her loneliness grew
They all had friends and plans and parties
    Once, she did too
But now like a stranger in fog-stricken dusk
Where she feels more than she sees, she must
Learn to live without what once was
And forget what once she knew

    Janet~

  3. I'd like to try one more; the first one was a little off-the-cuff because the 'heavily influenced by bodies' sparked something. I hope this idea takes off. I think its great!

  4. Fog is fascinating.

Awe snap I had a comment going and 'fat fingered it'

Anyway Happy New Year to you and Happy B-day to Wiki.

I often include links to information sites - I had one to Wiki yesterday:
    https://julesgemstonepages.wordpress.com/2015/01/15/defining-moments-1-15-cd-648/

I also have the same post at 'B' which wouldn't let me get there the way I wanted to to get the 'B' link...so ... enjoy.

    2. "B" doesn't quite work like WP in notifications...
Here's whats on my post to your comment:

Yes, three people. The first was the inspiration for the tan renga - Sky.
Our host at CD wrote the first completion or two lines of 7 syllables.
Then I wrote three separate completions.

I've had a busy week. I thought Margo's post was 'Froggy went a courting' -
And I would be delighted to add my link there. :)

I expropriated your prompt in a way, but I'll steer anybody who posts here back to your "Foggy" :-)

  8. Wow. I liked your idea, and even more, the poem you created from it. I felt that I was watching that girl and being that girl at the same time.
