"Doom" (poem)

A visual prompt from Margo Roby ("Wordgathering".)

This painting made me claustrophobic...

By Anna Ancher

~ Doom ~

Suffocating
In the
Emptiness of the
Space
With doors
Opening to a
Dead-end
With broken
Light seeping through
The
Tiny windows
Of my cell
The
Key’s on
The inside, but
There
Is no
Escape for me

  1. Interesting, Sasha. Having read de's first, which is an impression of paths outward, I appreciated the oppositeness here. I had not thought of emptiness as suffocating, but now see how it might be. The fact that the speaker can, but doesn't, escape makes the poem particularly thoughtful.

    1. I wrote mine first and then went over to read De's. I had the impression that she wanted to get out of that house, too!
Thank you for visiting me, thank you for the comment :-)

  2. Yes, Happy Sasha...I can see that feeling, very maze-like. You've captured the intensity of the emotion that goes well! Tuesday tryouts are fun huh!! I picked the "Van Gogh's Diner!"

  3. Hi Hannah!
Got your comment, but comments are acting funny, they show up with a delay I think..
I'll be over to see where Vincent has taken you :-)
    Thank you for visiting me!

  4. It is interesting how we all see things differently. This is cool, the feeling of claustrophobia in an open, empty space. Well done.

    1. Thanks, Mark, I wonder if you've chosen the same painting?..I shall go see.

  5. I chose the same painting too...we had different perspectives, but I really liked 'suffocating in the emptiness of the space with doors' as it is an unusual and interesting way of looking at things, as usually one suffocates when things are closed in rather than opened up! Nice job.

    1. Thank you, Mary. It really is an interesting painting: certainly more than one way of looking at it.

  6. I understand your claustrophobic dead-end feeling - I feel the lack of an infinity point in the picture beyond the end window.

  7. Sasha, It is interesting that we both had dark views of this painting. Love your poem.
