Remember those brand new moments
wrapped tightly
in the crisp wintry nights
fastened with the velvety ribbons of city streets
a bright bow of sunrise sitting on top?
They were placed under the tree by someone’s hand
like Christmas gifts, to not be touched yet
They taunted, and drove us crazy
and did not
stand a chance –
we tore the wrapping to shreds
dying to feel them
seize them
keep
them
Someone was telling us to not open the gifts
early
we were too happy to listen

The Happy Amateur

ReplyDeleteAnna, Audrey - thank you for your words.
ReplyDeleteThe metaphors in your first stanza catch and hold the reader's attention. And the joie de vivre expressed is contagious. What a wonderful holiday piece!

DeleteGreedily seizing a precious moment -- but when unwrapped, all we have is our unsatisfied greed. Then someone suggests no unwrapping -- so we can enjoy so much more beauty

DeleteThat's why I don't put the gifts under the tree until I'm ready for the kids to open them; otherwise, it's just cruel. :)
ReplyDeleteWe've just finished wrapping over here :-) morning (not too early, I hope) of the 25th is when the gifts are going to be found under the tree, all our beautiful wrapping torn to shreds in two seconds!
