THE
VOICE OF MY LAND
By
Alexandra Palmer
I.
The
voice of my land, you’re my blessing, my pain,
I
hear it a-calling again and again;
Calling
me homeward and pleading me to stay –
We’ve
only grown closer since I went away.
My
Motherland distant, we’re never apart,
In
valleys of mem’ry you cradle my heart;
You
sing to it softly your song bitter-sweet,
As
towards the eternal my days swiftly fleet.
II.
I
know that one day I shall see your sweet face,
And
into my chest my own heart you will place;
Upon
my tired head you will lay a dry wreath,
And
happy and peaceful I’ll draw my last breath.
The
voice of my land, you’re my blessing, my pain,
I
hear it a-calling again and again;
Calling
me homeward and pleading me to stay –
We’ve
only grown closer since I went away.

Happy Amateur

For some reason this reads like a tender Scottish love-song. So very beautiful! I live 500yds from where I grew up. I can't imagine leaving the country! Thank-you for sharing this beaut!
ReplyDeleteMy guess the reason is Burns' poem :-) I tried to write in the style of "My heart's in the Highlands."
DeleteThank you, Janet, so much, a praise from You is always very inspiring!
Alexandra, I love this beautiful, melodic poem that gives a respectful nod to Robbie Burns - well done, I think he would like it!
ReplyDeleteAnd thanks so much for participating in my contest to name my romance novel - it's so much fun to read everyone's suggestions! I'm really enjoying the interaction (and don't worry about how many you contribute, I think it's just awesome!). So nice to meet you, and I'm honored that you've been reading my blog! ~ Julie :)
Thank you, Julie, I actually wrote this for the dagda publishing Burns contest, and I found out about it reading your blog :-)
DeleteI don't leave comments as often as I should, but there's just so much to read and so little time in a day (and night.) I often visit you blog and enjoy your poetry and art.
Nice seeing you here!
"your blog" (typing too fast..again..)
