November 2014 Poem-A-Day Chapbook Challenge: Day 21

North of surprise and south of discontent
Between the rolling pastures and unspent
White fires of winter, tween July and grief
Time is suspended. What a single leaf
Still clinging to the redbud tree can tell
About the handless clocks that work their spell
We happily fall under, all-too-quick
To trust, while every soft and harmless tick
Is nothing but a moment taken by
A stealthy thief that’s after our July?
What does it know, this last November leaf
About what comes between us and this thief
About the sweet surrender that we learn
With passing seasons, as we give and yearn
To give yet more with passion and intent
North of surprise and south of discontent?
