Happy 12th Birthday, Danny! Acrostic

To our dear boy on his big day
We raise a toast: may Danny stay
Ever so kind and gentle, for
Love makes us strong -- it is the core.
Veer not from love -- it is the light,
Ever so gentle, kind, and bright.

Poetic Asides Poem-A-Day April Challenge Day 8: Dare

Eleanor Dare

Did she feel happy
standing in the ancient church
on her wedding day,

an artist’s daughter
marrying a bricklayer
a tiler – her man,

still a teenager
like herself – did she tremble
when he kissed her lips?

Did she feel happy
already aware of what
was lying ahead –

the dangers of the
questionable journey to
the unexplored shores,

their son or daughter
crossing the ocean in the
vessel of her womb?

Did she feel happy
in her probably short life?
I daresay she did.

November 2014 Poem-A-Day Chapbook Challenge: Day 6

Remember grownups always telling you
“Enjoy your childhood!”? – hollow it has rung
That doomed advice, but I am guilty, too
Of trying to bestow it on the young

They’re busy living, they’ve no use for our
Sage boring words, they know a better way
(Like climbing trees) to spend this precious hour
So bite your tongue and let them fly away

Let them be children, though it will not last
Just let them be. They’re in that magic place
Where time is stalled – no future, yet, no past
Just “happy now” shines on the old clock’s face

Happy Valentine's Day!

You know it’s a lot of snow, when even here, in Baltimore, we can make
snowmen!

"Happy"

Marc Chagall 'Progulka' ('A Stroll')
1917

'Happy'

I’ve no weight, I’m a kite,
Fly me high, hold on tight,
Don’t let go of my hand,
Bye-bye, land!

Keep your feet on the ground,
Planet Earth’s small and round,
With its oceans and all,
Like a ball.

Limitations disperse,
You are my universe,
Standing firmly, and bound
To the ground.

I am air, I am light,
I am day, I am night,
Watch me how I go whee!
Fly with me?

Burning bright, burning clear,
From this world disappear
In the blink of an eye
You and I.

"Forever Old" (a Happy Halloween poem)

“Darling, when we’re together, every day is Halloween.”
Morticia Addams

“Forever Old”

The moon was full, the graveyard
Was misty and serene,
The party had not started,
Just two of them were seen –

Just two decaying corpses:
A beggar one had been,
The other one, with tresses,
She’d been a cruel queen.

The beggar begged, “My dearest,
Come rattle bones with me,
I’m lonely, o my scariest,
As lonely as can be.”

Her teeth did click-cluck-clatter,
“Me? Rattle bones with you?
But, frankly, as a matter
Of fact…I’m lonely, too.”

“What do you mean, my mummy?
What is your final say?”
“Oh, do not be a dummy,
Come, rattle me away!

Let’s spend our death together,
Why not?  I’ll be your queen.”
(The dead began to gather:
‘twas time for Halloween.)

“What’s up?” they said.  “We’ll marry,”
The beggar told them. “Hey!
Woo-hoo!” they howled, “Be merry
And wed without delay,

Don’t let the iron go cold,
Strike!”  So, that night they wed
And stayed forever old,
Forever happy dead.
